Stiles looked around the party that he had got an in-person invite to from one of the other magic-users in his history of magic class. He hadn’t told anyone about it and even successfully lied to several of his pack who thought he was joining them at their parties.
The pack was a mishmash of creatures, and while Stiles wasn’t the only human, he was the one that seemed to attract the kind of attention that got him hurt. His last boyfriend in freshman year had tried to kill him. Then there was just Beacon Hills as a whole. The local pack there had been good, but they were very much hands-off since they weren’t a normal pack by any stretch of the imagination. Finding out that Cora Hale was a Werewolf had been a shock but nearly as much of one. Stiles had always known that something was up with the Hales. Peter had never tried to hide that he wasn’t human and loved to fuck with Stiles.
It was why Stiles hadn’t felt bad about throwing Peter through a tree one night when the man had been fucking with him, and it was how Stiles found out he was magical. Peter had been just as shocked about that as Stiles had been, even as he lay there healing from Stiles breaking more than a few bones in his body with the force he put him through the tree. Of course, the Hales had been pretty hands-off when it was found out that Scott McCall had been bitten by an unknown Alpha when he had gone to see his father in San Francisco. Stiles had, by the point, the Hales found out about him, trained Scott since Peter slipped Stiles books on the whole world he was now in on the regular.
The books would appear in Stiles’ bedroom, and he would settle the others on the stand beside the window when he was done with them. Many were so very old, and those Stiles usually used his magic to transfer them to a new volume, the first had been a normal journal, but after that, Peter had slipped new, blank tomes in the stacks as well. A few of the magic books were still in Stiles’ possession as it seemed that maybe Peter had bought them just for Stiles. They never talked, but the wording on the notes was all Peter.
Still, the rest of the Hales stayed away from Stiles and the pack. They had no Alpha like other packs did but they all worked well together.
“Want to dance?” a girl asked as she came over to him with a grin on her face.
Stiles shook his head, and he looked around again. He had been watching a man who had a mask on his upper face. He had been dancing with a girl and then a guy and never seemed to settle. Then with his third target for dancing, he had stared at Stiles the entire time. His eyes had promised that fun could happen with them, but then someone had bumped into Stiles, and when he looked back, the guy was gone. Stiles was still trying to find him again.
Draining his drink, Stiles tossed the cup toward the trash, using a burst of magic to make sure that it made it in when it looked like it was going to fall short. He pumped an arm in the air to celebrate, but he hit someone when he brought it down. He was turning to tell them sorry when a hand landed on his shoulder.
“It’s fine. If I didn’t want to be hit, I shouldn’t get too close. I’ve seen that most people give you a large berth on space the last three years.”
Stiles swallowed. The voice was like sex on a stick, and it made him want a hell of a lot of things. Stiles looked up into the mirror that showed him the side of his face, but it gave him a good look at the man behind him. It was his friend who he had been watching the dancing. The man’s mouth was quirked in a smirk, and Stiles kind of wanted to do something to drop that, but before he could, the man’s eyes flashed red. Alpha Werewolf. That would piss everyone in his pack off when they found him smelling of another wolf. He was pretty sure that Jackson would not let him leave the house anytime soon; Scott would look betrayed. Allison would want to hunt them down, and Lydia would just follow along to ensure that Allison didn’t get herself killed or caught. Danny and Kira would just watch them and make bets on who pissed off Stiles the most.
“Well, I do have a few issues with limbs that do what they want instead of what I want them to. But there are instances where they do what I want because they want the same thing that I do.”
“Yeah? When is that?” the Alpha asked as he wrapped an arm around Stiles’ chest an,d pulled Stiles back into his body. They started to rock back and forth there in place. It wasn’t dancing, but it was something that he was enjoying.
“When I’m doing the mattress mambo,” Stiles said.
The Alpha laughed, his chest rumbling in happiness from it, and it set Stiles’ body on fire. He had come out to have fun, but this was proving to be a good night.
“No one is at my place, and it’s just around the corner,” Stiles said.
“Is that offer to mambo?” the Alpha asked.
“Then I guess we can do that. I was planning on making people jealous here but leaving with you is just as good to me. I think I want that more. Let everyone see you leave with me.”
“Ah, you don’t see how you come off, do you? You and your little pack of friends that no one can approach. Everyone is scared. There are, of course, rumors that you are all dating each other. I, of course, know that it’s not true. You never smell like the others, not like they do their mates.” The Alpha’s arm tightened, and then they were walking toward the door.
“Where are you going, Derek? It’s not even costume prize time!” someone yelled.
“I got a better offer!” Derek yelled.
There were fifty Derek’s in the undergrad classes on campus and the only reason Stiles knew that was for a report he had done for a class. He had asked someone in registration to give him the names of all of the undergraduates. It hadn’t been the hardest thing, but this guy had to be in the same grade as him since he had been watching Stiles for three years.
“Which way?” Derek asked.
“Well, I would rather walk normal and see your face.”
“Then over here.” Derek tugged Stiles with him over to a darkened alcove.
Derek pressed Stiles into the wall, and he moved his mask up to where Stiles could see his face. He was older than Stiles thought, and Stiles was pretty sure that he wasn’t an undergrad like Stiles was. His face was kind. There were several very young Alphas going to school here at the moment after a group of rogue hunters had taken out four packs while the students were at school, but Stiles had met each of them. This man was not one. He hadn’t been told of any other Alphas who went here. Though he also didn’t need to know all of them.
“So, Derek, what are you going to school for?”
“A little of this, a little of that. Finished my doctorate two years ago and am working on another degree now.”
“And you stayed here?”
“My family isn’t here. Which is the best thing in the world for me.”
“You don’t have your family as your pack?”
“Not after getting my nice new colored eyes. Due to giving a childhood friend a mercy kill, I had blue eyes. I regretted having to take her life, but I don’t regret doing it. Still, I carry that guilt, so I had blue eyes. My mother made the wrong choice not to tell anyone, so the pack never trusted me again, outside of a few closer family members. When I was coming back from home this summer, my little sister and I were going on a cross-country trip, and we were attacked by an alpha. He was insane after being tortured by hunters by them killing his pack. I put him out of his misery, but then I was an Alpha, and my mother didn’t want the pack to be divided, so I stayed here and built a pack slowly. I’ve had my eye on you for a while, but you never go out alone, and your pack is pretty protective.”
“My pack is crazy. I’m more protected than they are because my magic hasn’t failed me yet, and it won’t matter when I need it.”
“You are the heart of the pack, Stiles. They will always protect you because of that.”
“Well, protection can still mean respect and not having to do stupid shit to get to go to a Halloween party where one of them doesn’t follow me around and growl at everyone who even looks my direction.”
Derek nodded his head, but he had a smile on his lips. “So that’s why you want to take me back to the pack’s den and shove it into their faces. You are lucky I’m just a big enough asshole to agree to that.”
The sound of doors slamming had Stiles jerking awake. He looked at Derek, who was still asleep, and he knew that things were about to get real. He grabbed the bowl of Mountain Ash powder lying on his bedside table and tipped it out before pushing his will onto it. It surrounded his bed just as the door opened up, and there was a snarl before three Werewolves were standing in the door and growing.
“Shut them up,” Derek said. He rolled to where he was cuddled into Stiles’ back.
“Stiles, that’s a Werewolf,” Scott said.
“Yes, and?” Stiles asked.
Stiles really wished that Scott was sometimes a little faster on the uptake on things.
“I’m not stupid, Scott, and he told me long before he ever thought of coming home with me. Though we didn’t exchange full names, that’s okay. Now I was up half the night, and I needed sleep. Shut the door, and no, I am not taking down the Mountain Ash until you all get the fuck out of here and I can lock the door. If you guys wake me up again with your idiocy, then I’ll make sure you are all impotent for weeks.”
The door slammed shut, and even without any enhanced hearing, he could hear Jackson, Scott, and Isaac bitching. Stiles waved his hand at the door, and the locks closed, and the magic runes lit up that would keep anyone but him out. He touched the bowl, and the Mountain Ash powder started to swirl around the room and slip into the bowl.
“You are more powerful than I thought,” Derek said.
“Hmm, and you are higher placed than I thought. You tried to hide it last night, but you didn’t cover your back when you went to the bathroom. There is only a single pack in the world that uses that as a family sigil, Derek Sebastian Hale.” Stiles moved to where he was on his back, and Derek dropped his head on his hand to look at Stiles with a slightly sheepish look there. “Don’t worry. I’m not mad. Hale’s a damned big name. It’s fine. So my pack doesn’t have an actual Alpha.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“You have Erica and Boyd in your pack, or I assume you do. Isaac talked about them finding a pack they really liked. I assume it’s you, Cora, and Peter?”
“With a few others in there as well, yes, from the college they are at.”
“You want us to be a fuck you to your mother,” Stiles said.
“Well, that wouldn’t be horrible. I wouldn’t expect that you would have to join my pack even if we started to date. We can take things slow on all of that. Though I guess that this introduction to your pack is going to piss them off.”
“It’s all their own fault. I like doing things out of spite. I really liked doing you out of spite.” Stiles waggled his eyebrows which made Derek laugh.
“You are horrible, and I kind of like it. Okay, so let’s get some sleep and then we can get food and talk. We can easily have some fun with this on the way before we leave school when it’s time. I already know I’m not going home this summer.”
“I’ll gladly go home and make sure that your mother knows. Peter’s gonna be happy he can just slip me books the normal way instead of waiting for me to go home to find them in my bedroom.”
“You are the one he’s been training up for years?” Derek asked.
“Oh, this is going to be great.”
